On Tuesday, the Tunisian judiciary issued a new order to incarcerate former Justice Minister Noureddine Bhiri, who is currently detained on another case, over what is known as the case of granting state citizenship to foreigners involved in "international terrorism cases."
This was stated by Hanan Kadad, the official spokesperson for the Judicial Pole for the Fight against Terrorism in Tunisia.
Kadad explained that the investigating judge of the Judicial Pole for the Fight against Terrorism issued an arrest warrant (order) against the Justice Minister during the year 2013, Noureddine Bhiri, in a case related to the granting of Tunisian citizenship to foreigners implicated in international terrorism cases, without providing further details.
It’s worth noting that Bhiri currently holds the position of Vice President of the Ennahda Movement.
Since February 15, Bhiri has been in prison following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Tunisian judiciary, charging him with conspiracy against the security of the state.
Tunisia has witnessed a campaign of detentions this year that included politicians, media professionals, activists, judges, and businessmen, after which the Tunisian President, Kais Saied, accused some of the detainees of conspiring against state security and standing behind the crises of commodity distribution and rising prices.
The opposition and human rights organizations say that President Saied is exploiting the judiciary to silence his political opponents.
