Girona FC continued their chase of Real Madrid in the battle for the top spot in Spain's La Liga football league after securing a thrilling last-minute victory over visiting Atletico Madrid with a 4-3 score in the 19th round of the competition.

Girona, which has been having a legendary season in the tournament thus far, increased their points to 48. However, they remain in second place, trailing behind league leaders Real Madrid only by direct confrontations, as both teams are tied in points. Real Madrid has crowned themselves as the Winter Champions at the end of the first half of the season.

On the other hand, Atletico Madrid, which suffered its fourth consecutive away defeat outside Madrid, stalled at 38 points, waiting for the rest of the round's matches to conclude.

The match was filled with excitement from the start as Girona took an early lead with a goal by Valery Fernández Estrada in the second minute. Atletico Madrid's experienced striker Álvaro Morata equalized with a goal in the 14th minute.

Savio de Oliveira (26) and Daley Blind (39) added the second and third goals for Girona. Nonetheless, Morata showcased his brilliance by netting Atletico's second goal in the 44th minute.

The intensity continued into the second half as Morata once again found the back of the net, scoring his third goal for Atletico in the 54th minute.

As everyone braced for the match to end in a draw, Iván Martín granted Girona the three points by scoring a dramatic winning goal for the home team in the second minute of stoppage time, reviving Girona's victory march after their previous 1-1 draw with Real Betis.
