Namibia has rebuffed Germany's backing of Israel's stance at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where Israel is facing charges of genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement issued on website X, the Namibian presidency expressed its profound concern regarding Germany's "shocking decision" made two days ago, which rejected the moral indictment presented by South Africa at the ICJ against Israel.

Germany announced its intention to intervene as a third party in support of Israel in the genocide case filed against it.

Namibia pointed to what it described as the "first genocide" of the 20th century perpetrated by Germany on Namibian territory between 1904 and 1908, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent Namibians under inhumane and brutal conditions.

The Namibian government stated that the German government has yet to fully atone for the genocide committed on Namibian soil.

Windhoek criticized Berlin for ignoring the violent strikes that claimed the lives of over 23,000 Palestinians in Gaza. It also overlooked various United Nations reports highlighting the internal displacement of around 85% of the civilian population in Gaza amid a severe shortage of food and basic services.

The Namibian presidency reiterated a call made by President Hage Geingob at the end of last month, declaring, "No peace-loving human being can disregard the slaughter committed against Palestinians in Gaza."

Geingob appealed to the German government to reconsider its inappropriate decision to intervene as a third party in defense of the genocidal acts Israel is accused of and to support Israel before the ICJ.

The ICJ in The Hague has witnessed hearings to examine the case brought by South Africa concerning the Israeli military assault on the Gaza Strip, accusing Israel of committing genocide contradictory to the United Nations Convention to Prevent Genocide of 1948, ratified by both South Africa and Israel.
