A Russian missile assault on the residential areas of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, resulted in at least 17 injuries, with two individuals suffering severe harm.

The incident occurred late Tuesday night when two S-300 missiles struck buildings in the city center, as reported by the Regional Governor, Oleh Syniehubov. Following the attack, 14 individuals required hospitalization.

A serious condition is being faced by two of the victims, women, as communicated by Syniehubov via a Telegram post.

Ihor Terekhov, the Mayor of Kharkiv, condemned the strike, noting the missiles hit areas devoid of any military infrastructure, impacting civilian residences instead. Terekhov’s message on Telegram highlighted the extensive damage to at least ten buildings and informed of ongoing rescue operations working through the debris—a sizable amount according to his account.

Ukraine’s Emergency Services disclosed that one missile inflicted damage on a three-story structure that once functioned as a medical center.

Situated merely 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the frontier with Russia, Kharkiv has been subject to continuous shelling since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

As of this report, Moscow has not commented on the Kharkiv attack. However, the Russian Defence Ministry has claimed its air defense systems intercepted seven Ukrainian missiles and obliterated four drones flying over the Belgorod region, located approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Kharkiv.

Belgorod’s regional governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, has confirmed that there have been no immediate casualties reported from the aforementioned interceptions.

The Russian military initially made significant gains in the Kharkiv region upon their invasion of Ukraine but faced a significant setback during a swift Ukrainian counter-offensive in September 2022.
