United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres criticized the absence of a permanent seat for Africa on the UN Security Council and renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Guterres, in a post on his X platform account last Saturday, emphasized the need for international institutions to reflect today’s world, not one from 80 years ago, in his words.
“How can we accept that Africa does not have a single permanent member on the Security Council?” said the UN Secretary-General.
He explained that the upcoming Future Summit, which the UN intends to hold in September, will present “an opportunity to look at global governance reforms and rebuild trust.”
Guterres had previously noted that the Future Summit “will be a unique opportunity to help rebuild trust and make outdated multilateral institutions and frameworks compatible with today’s world, based on equality and solidarity.”
Guterres reiterated his call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, saying in another post on his X platform account, “People in Gaza are dying not only because of bombs and bullets, but also due to a lack of food and clean water, and the absence of electricity and medicine in hospitals, and this must stop.”
The Secretary-General of the UN affirmed his determination to continue calling for an end to the war in Gaza, stating, “I will not back down from my call for an immediate ceasefire on humanitarian grounds and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”
