At least two dead and 200 injured in Nairobi gas explosion

At least two people have died and more than 200 have been injured in the Kenyan capital Nairobi after a truck carrying gas exploded, causing a massive fire.

Isaac Maigua Mwaura, government spokesperson, stated that the explosion generated a “huge ball of fire that spread widely”. He also noted that the inferno caused extensive damage to numerous vehicles, commercial properties, and residential houses in the neighborhood, with many residents still inside their homes when the incident occurred late at night.

Earlier, the Kenyan Red Cross reported nearly 300 individuals injured in the explosion, which occurred on Thursday night in the Embakasi neighborhood, southeast of Nairobi. The affected area has been cordoned off by the police, although some individuals were observed collecting their belongings and assessing the damage. Firefighters are currently working to control the blaze.

Mwaura commented, “The scene has now been secured, and a command center is now in place to help coordinate rescue operations and other intervention efforts.”

The incident has led to significant destruction in the area, and the authorities are actively engaged in managing the aftermath of the explosion.
