The spokesperson for the General Coordination of IDP and Refugee Camps in the Sudanese region of Darfur, Adam Regal, told Al Jazeera that the displaced people in the “Kalma” camp are facing the threat of starvation due to a lack of food.
Regal explained that the situation in the camp, located in the city of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, is “tragic and catastrophic,” emphasizing the urgent need for intervention by regional and international humanitarian organizations to prevent the exacerbation of the crisis.
He pointed out that the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has led to the suspension of food rations provided by the World Food Programme, as well as the cessation of marginal jobs that used to provide limited income for the displaced people to cover some of their living expenses.
This warning comes after the World Food Programme reported on Friday that it had already received reports of people dying of hunger in Sudan, confirming its current inability to provide regular food assistance, with only one in every ten people facing emergency levels of hunger receiving help.
The World Food Programme called on the warring parties in Sudan to provide immediate guarantees to ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian food aid to conflict-affected areas, where displaced civilians suffer from hunger, siege, and isolation, preventing any life-saving assistance from reaching them.
About 18 million people in various parts of Sudan are suffering from severe hunger, with over 5 million facing emergency levels of hunger in the most conflict-affected areas.
The “Kalma” camp is one of the largest camps overcrowded with displaced people, whose numbers have increased since the outbreak of the war in April 2023, and it is located in Nyala, which has been under the control of the Rapid Support Forces since late October.
In another context, Ibrahim Jabir, a member of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, said during his address to the army forces at the Sarkab camp in northern Omdurman yesterday, Friday, that the hour of victory is approaching, and that liberation is imminent, according to his expression.
Jabir affirmed that any party attempting to bypass the Sudanese people to set plans for them, or determine their future, is delusional, saying that this will never happen, according to him.
Meanwhile, the Coordination of Civil Democratic Forces “Taqadum” stated in a statement yesterday evening that the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, informed a delegation from the coordination in Juba that his government would present a vision to the Sudanese civil forces to solve the crisis through dialogue leading to achieving peace and stability, in addition to continuing its efforts with the Sudanese army leadership, the Rapid Support Forces, and the international and regional community to expedite reaching a ceasefire.
It is noteworthy that a delegation from the Coordination of Civil Democratic Forces “Taqadum,” led by Abdullah Hamdouk, is visiting Juba concurrently with a visit by a delegation from the Forces of Freedom and Change, the Democratic Bloc Alliance.
