Armed Attack Results in 10 Police Officers Killed at Pakistan Police Station

Dozens of armed attackers targeted a police station in northwestern Pakistan early Monday, resulting in the killing of at least 10 police officers. This incident occurred just days before the country’s general elections, which have witnessed numerous attacks on candidates and party supporters in recent days.

Asher Hayaat Gandapur, the police chief of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, stated that over 30 armed assailants launched an attack from three different directions, leading to a gunfire exchange lasting for over 2.5 hours. The regional police chief further clarified that 10 police officers were killed and 4 others were injured in the assault on the Chuwando police station in the Dera Ismail Khan area. He added that the attackers briefly gained control of the police station during their onslaught, which commenced at approximately 1:30 AM local time. No entity has claimed responsibility for the attack thus far.

Pakistan has experienced a surge in violence in the days leading to the upcoming general elections scheduled for the following Thursday. Local newspaper “Dawn” reported today that unidentified assailants on motorcycles had hurled hand grenades at election offices of various parties, residences of candidates, and the election commission office in different areas of the Balochistan province bordering Iran.
