Sir Alex Ferguson, the former manager of Manchester United, has dismissed any possibility of Tottenham Hotspur ever winning the English Premier League.
Ange Postecoglou received much praise for his work since taking over as Tottenham’s coach in the summer following his departure from Celtic.
Tottenham, who was at the top of the table in October last year, is currently in fourth place with 47 points from 24 matches, trailing 7 points behind the leaders, Liverpool. However, Ferguson believes they will never clinch the title.
Responding to a question from Sky Sports about Tottenham’s chances of winning the Premier League title, the Manchester United legend stated, “There’s no chance,” before bursting into laughter.
Ferguson continued, “The last time they won was in 1961. That’s a long time. Today’s expectations point towards Liverpool and Manchester City as strong contenders for the Premier League title.”
The last time Tottenham claimed the English league title was in the 1960-1961 season when Bill Nicholson was the team’s manager.
In contrast, Ferguson secured the league title 13 times in the Premier League as the manager of United before retiring in 2013 after a successful career.
In 1984, Ferguson attracted interest from several top clubs after his remarkable success with Aberdeen in Scotland before joining the Red Devils’ coaching staff.
During that period, Tottenham was the most determined club to sign Ferguson as a replacement for Peter Shreeves at White Hart Lane.
Indeed, Ferguson held a meeting with the club’s chairman at the time, Irving Scholar, and co-owner Paul Bobroff, as they gathered in Paris before he had a change of heart in a historic moment.
