North Korea announced on Monday that it has developed a new system for a multiple missile launcher capable of bringing about a “qualitative change” in its defensive capabilities.
The official North Korean news agency stated that the Pyongyang Defense Science Academy conducted a “ballistic missile launch control test for a 240mm caliber rocket launcher” last Saturday with the aim of developing a “controllable ballistic missile and artillery system.”
The agency further added that there will now be a “reassessment” of the new missile launcher and an increase in its role on the battlefield.
North Korea declared its neighbor to the south as its “primary enemy” this year, closing agencies dedicated to the reunification of the two countries and threatening war if South Korea crosses its borders.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reiterated on Friday that Pyongyang will not hesitate to “put an end” to South Korea if it comes under attack, describing Seoul as the “most hostile and dangerous state” to North Korea.
In January, North Korea unleashed a barrage of artillery shells near two border islands belonging to South Korea, prompting the southern part to conduct live-fire drills and issue evacuation orders for residents.
In contrast, South Korean President Moon Jae-in pledged to respond forcefully to any aggression from Pyongyang, urging his army to “act first and report later” in case of provocation.
Moon has strengthened defense cooperation with the United States and Japan since taking office in 2022, including expanding joint exercises to counter increasing threats from Pyongyang.
