Armenia confirmed the deaths of two soldiers by Azerbaijani forces in the southern Syunik region. This announcement follows Azerbaijan accusing Armenia of injuring a soldier in an attack on a border guard site.

The Armenian Ministry of Defense stated today, Tuesday, that “units of the Azerbaijani armed forces fired small arms at Armenian combat positions in the Nakhichevan area,” resulting in the deaths of two soldiers and injuries to several others.

Conversely, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense claimed that Armenian soldiers fired twice late on Monday in the village of Khojanabi in the Tovuz area (northeast), an allegation denied by Armenia.

Yesterday, Baku reported that an Azerbaijani border guard soldier was injured due to gunfire from the Armenian side.

The Azerbaijani Border Service stated in a release that the soldier was wounded following Armenian army gunfire on Azerbaijani border guard positions in the village of Kologhishlaq in the Zangilan district.

Azerbaijan emphasized that “the military-political leadership of Armenia bears full responsibility for this provocative incident.”

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been in conflict for more than three decades over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. On September 20th last year, Azerbaijan declared that it had regained sovereignty over the region after a swift military operation. The Armenian separatists handed over their weapons and military equipment and withdrew from the area under a ceasefire agreement.
