Amnesty International has issued a grave warning about the looming threat of a real and imminent genocide that is endangering the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. The organization emphasized that there is no safe place for civilians to seek refuge from the ongoing bombardment.
The international organization stated in a post on its platform that the population of Rafah has multiplied five times since the start of the Israeli attack on Gaza on October 7th. The Israeli occupation army is preparing for a ground operation in Rafah in southern Gaza as residents from the northern and central parts of the strip have been forced to flee to Rafah to escape the battles.
On Sunday evening, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported that the Israeli army approved an operational plan to launch a ground operation in Rafah, which is considered the last sanctuary for displaced individuals in the devastated region.
Amnesty International reiterated that there is a real and imminent danger of genocide in Rafah, with no safe haven for civilians seeking shelter from the airstrikes. In the early hours of Monday, the Israeli army carried out a series of intense airstrikes on various areas of the city, resulting in the death and injury of dozens of Palestinians, including children and women, in clear disregard for international warnings about the repercussions of invading the overcrowded city of displaced persons.
Since October 7th, Israel has been waging a destructive war on the Gaza Strip, leading to the deaths of 28,340 Palestinians and injuring 67,984 others, mostly children and women, in addition to thousands who are missing under the rubble, according to Palestinian and UN data.
