Coach of Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti, launched a veiled attack against his rival, Barcelona’s coach Xavi Hernandez, after the latter criticized the royal club and accused them of influencing referees. Hernandez had made derogatory remarks against Real Madrid, claiming that their influence over the referees is tarnishing the integrity of the Spanish league, stating that “the league is completely adulterated,” and even blind people can see it. He also expressed full agreement with the Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, stating that the football competition in Spain is compromised.
In a press conference prior to the derby against Atletico Madrid, when Ancelotti was questioned about this matter, he indirectly addressed Hernandez, stating, “I believe that I am a professional, and out of respect for Spanish football, I do not want to stoop to this level. Do not ask me more about this, as I do not wish to speak at a level that is unbecoming of professionals.”
Similarly, the Italian coach responded to accusations from the Barcelona club president, Joan Laporta, saying, “I will not stoop to this level,” when questioned by journalists about the recent statements issued by the Catalan club.
Ancelotti, who had previously maintained a good relationship with Xavi Hernandez, felt greatly disappointed by the remarks made by the Catalan coach after the match between Real Madrid and Almeria, particularly about the decisions taken by the match referee based on video assistant referee (VAR) requests.
The tension between the two coaches continues to brew, adding fiery sparks to upcoming encounters between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
