A Dutch court sentenced former Ajax and Sevilla winger Quincy Promes to six years in prison yesterday after proving his involvement with a drug trafficking gang to the Netherlands.
Promes, 32, currently playing for Russian team Spartak Moscow, was implicated in smuggling 1360 kilograms of cocaine to the Netherlands in two shipments through the port of Antwerp in Belgium in 2020, as reported by Sky Sports.
The former Dutch international, residing in Moscow, did not attend his trial in the Netherlands, and it is unlikely he will return to the country in the foreseeable future.
Court documents revealed that wiretapping phone calls and encrypted messages sent by Promes under the alias ‘Fantazma’ directly linked him to drug trafficking hidden in salt shipments from Brazil and transporting them from the port.
Court President M. Vanderhug emphasized that Promes, previously a role model, especially to the youth due to his football talent, had tarnished his image by engaging in major international drug smuggling operations to increase his wealth.
In a separate case, Promes was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay compensation for stabbing his cousin over a stolen necklace.
Promes, who represented the Netherlands in 50 international matches with 7 goals, was part of the team that lost to the Czech Republic in the Euro 2020 round of 16 held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Having joined Dutch giants Ajax in 2019 from Sevilla for €15 million, Promes left the Dutch capital for Moscow in 2021, playing for Spartak for the second time after 2014-2018, during which he won the best player award in the Russian Premier League.
