The Egyptian Army has thwarted a new drug smuggling operation and killed three smugglers on the Egyptian border with Israel, marking the second such announcement within a week.
The official military spokesman for the Egyptian Armed Forces, Gharib Abdel Hafez, stated on Thursday that the Egyptian Army foiled “an attempt to smuggle about 300 kilograms of various types of drugs” on the country’s northeastern border.
This incident is the second of its kind in just a few days. Last Tuesday, Egyptian authorities reported that they had thwarted a similar attempt near a border crossing with Israel, resulting in the death of one smuggler and the arrest of six others.
Additionally, an Israeli Army spokesperson last Tuesday reported that their forces fired upon militants in the border area with Egypt near Auja, confirming that one of their soldiers was injured in the clash.
The Israeli Army spokesperson noted that there were casualties during the engagement and that about 20 suspects, including armed individuals, had arrived from Egypt into the border area.
Israeli Channel 7 spoke of an unusual exchange of gunfire on the border with Egypt, and Israeli Army Radio suggested that the suspects were attempting to smuggle drugs into Israel.
Palestinian accounts on the platform “X” (formerly Twitter) relayed from Israeli media sources that militants had been killed and Israeli soldiers injured in those clashes.
