The Israeli army radio reported on Monday that Benny Gantz, the leader of the Blue and White party and a member of the Security Cabinet, tried to oust Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by enlisting support from members of Netanyahu’s Likud party.
According to the radio, representatives of Minister Gantz recently made contact with Likud ministers and Knesset members in an attempt to promote the replacement of Netanyahu in the Knesset.
Likud members were reportedly told that if they succeeded in withdrawing their confidence in Netanyahu without toppling the government, they would be taken care of politically within the Blue and White party.
The idea is to oust Netanyahu and replace him with another candidate from the Likud party. In this regard, it was mentioned that close associates of Gantz proposed different candidates for the position of prime minister without specifically naming them.
The fundamental concept revolves around appointing an agreed-upon candidate for a specific period, who commits not to run for the leadership of the Likud in the future.
The radio noted that Gantz chose not to comment on the report.
In recent weeks, there have been calls for early elections in Israel, but Netanyahu rejected the idea of holding elections during a time of war.
Netanyahu faces recurring criticism from the Israeli public and several politicians, including those from the Security Cabinet, due to the crisis involving the Israeli prisoners held in Gaza and the failure of his government to uncover and address the October 7, 2023 attack.
