German Army Chief: We Must Prepare for War
German Army Chief Carsten Breuer stated that his country must be ready for war within 5 years.
In an interview with the German newspaper “Welt am Sonntag”, Breuer indicated that preparing for war is a phased process.
Breuer expressed, “We have no time limit because, for the first time since the end of the Cold War, we are facing a possible external war.”
He added, “When I listen to analysts and see the possibility of a military threat from Russia, this means for us a preparedness period of 5 to 8 years.”
In response to a question about the possibility of Russian President Vladimir Putin expanding the war beyond Ukraine, the German Army Commander stated, “Intentions first and foremost. I see that in what Putin writes and says, and in his actions in Ukraine.”
The German Army Chief continued, “This includes military capabilities. We have seen that Russia has shifted to a war economy by the decision of the Duma, and now the possibility is increasing.”
It is worth mentioning that Germany decided to increase defense spending after the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war and established a special fund worth 100 billion euros (around $100.78 billion) to purchase advanced weapon systems and modernize its armed forces.
The German government has signed several weapons procurement contracts, the most important of which include the purchase of “F-35” fighter jets and American “Chinook” transport helicopters, as well as an Israeli-made missile defense system of the “Arrow 3” model.
