Columnist Jonathan Friedland of the British newspaper “The Guardian” posits that there is only one way out of the Gaza conflict, and that it is being obstructed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Therefore, US President Joe Biden should compel Netanyahu to step down from power. Friedland clarified that Netanyahu opposes the only viable path forward, the two-state solution, and is now acting only in his personal interest. The American President must step in to save Israel from its current Prime Minister.
Friedland noted that Biden’s relationship with Israel is profoundly deep, which he has demonstrated on numerous occasions, including during the current crisis. He added that Biden has one last service to perform for Israel—a task uniquely within his capability—by forcing Netanyahu out of power and ensuring he does not return.
According to Friedland, Netanyahu believes that standing up to Washington will win over Israeli voters. He said that the only acceptable options for the Gaza Strip are governance by a coalition of Arab states—which do not want it and will certainly reject it without Palestinian participation—or to re-occupy it. One option is unviable, and the other is unacceptable.
Friedland went on to say that at the heart of the issue is that Israel is currently led by a man who is fighting only for himself. Biden has the power to influence events in Israel and may be the only person in the world who can save Israel from Netanyahu. “He must do it,” Friedland asserts.
