The Bavarian State Consumer Advisory Center in Germany states that digestive problems are among the common health issues faced by women during the post-menopausal phase. The hormonal disturbances that occur during this stage can also lead to digestive system issues, causing women to suffer from bloating, abdominal pain, cramps, and constipation.
To tackle digestive issues during menopause, the center recommends proper nutrition. This involves consuming foods high in dietary fiber such as whole grain products, vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Dietary fibers stimulate bowel movements, enhancing the digestion process.
At the same time, it is advisable to reduce the intake of foods known to cause bloating, such as legumes, onions, garlic, and cabbages. Women should also limit their consumption of sugar, salt, baked goods, canned foods, sausages, potato chips, and fast food, in addition to saturated fats found, for example, in sweets.
Drinking enough fluids is also critical, with a daily minimum of 1.5 liters being recommended.
Besides a proper diet, regular physical activity and exercise are crucial as they activate bowel movements and thus, improve the digestive process.
