The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has unveiled the new annual tournament system for clubs that will commence from the upcoming year 2024.
FIFA, through a statement on its official website, announced the naming of the competition as the FIFA Intercontinental Cup for Clubs. The tournament will feature the reigning champions of the Champions League from each of the world's six continents.
FIFA further clarified that the tournament would take place in two stages. The first stage involves a match on the home ground of the Asian Champions League or African Champions League winner, alternating annually, against the Oceanian champions.
In the second pathway, the North American champion will play on their home turf against the South American champion, with the host alternating each year.
The dates for these matches will be determined later, following coordination with the clubs and the continental federations.
The winners from the first and second pathways will qualify for a decisive match, to be held on neutral ground on December 14, 2024.
The European champion awaits the victor from these encounters in a final match, which will take place at the same neutral venue on December 18, 2024.
