On Tuesday evening, Israeli police dispersed protesters, detained some, and prevented a protest vigil in Tel Aviv calling for the end of the war on Gaza.

Police attacked demonstrators who were carrying signs demanding the cessation of what they described as the “massacre” in Gaza.

The Al Jazeera correspondent reported that the Israeli police cordoned off the protest site, which the demonstrators had previously announced on social media.

According to the Haaretz newspaper, the Tel Aviv police forcefully dispersed the demonstration and confiscated banners under the pretext that they “offended public sentiments.”

Haifa Protest Denied

In a related context, the Israeli police announced that they “will not allow a protest against the war on Gaza scheduled for Saturday evening in Haifa (north)” according to the Israeli “Walla” website.

The same source indicated that the police in an official statement attributed the refusal to the protest organizers’ “inability to control the identity of the demonstrators and participants,” which could lead to what they described as “serious disturbances.”

In Haifa, the branch of the “Democratic Front for Peace and Equality” (an Arab/Jewish leftist alliance) and Israeli movements had announced their intention to organize a demonstration to call for a “ceasefire, a comprehensive prisoner swap deal and the end of political oppression,” as reported by Walla.

In recent weeks, calls have escalated within Israel demanding the cessation of the prolonged war on Gaza, which has lasted over 100 days without achieving its stated objectives of eliminating the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and returning Israeli captives held in the territory.

Since October 7 of last year, the Israeli military has been waging a devastating war on Gaza, which to date has resulted in 24,285 martyrs and 61,154 injuries, and has caused the displacement of more than 85% (approximately 1.9 million people) of the Strip’s population. The war has also caused enormous destruction to infrastructure, vital facilities, and hospitals.
