The Syrian regime's army announced today, Tuesday, that areas surrounding the capital Damascus were subjected to an Israeli attack, causing material damage, according to a statement broadcast by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
The statement reported that an Israeli aerial attack took place in the early hours of Tuesday from the direction of the Golan Heights, which is occupied by Israel.
The attack targeted several positions in the Rif Dimashq Governorate, the source said. The statement added that the attack "resulted in some material damages."
Last Friday, Syria had witnessed similar attacks, where the Syrian regime's army reported an Israeli aerial attack targeting the southern region, followed hours later by another attack on areas in the Rif Dimashq Governorate, confirming that the damages "were limited to material losses."
The military source did not specify the nature of the targeted site. However, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the Israeli strikes hit an artillery battalion belonging to the regime forces near the town of Kanaker, which includes elements from Hezbollah.
This Israeli aerial targeting of Syria is the first in 2024, after escalating its targeting of Syrian territory, especially against Hezbollah positions, since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip on October 7.
Since the conflict erupted in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, primarily targeting Iranian and Hezbollah objectives, including warehouses, arms and ammunition shipments, but also positions of the Syrian army.
Israel rarely confirms these strikes, but it repeats that it will confront what it describes as Tehran's attempts to entrench its military presence in Syria.
Tehran accused Israel last month of killing Razi Musavi, a senior commander in the Quds Force affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, in a strike near Damascus.
On the other hand, the "Islamic Resistance in Iraq" announced today, Tuesday, that it targeted the Green Village American base in northeastern Syria with drones.
For weeks, Iraqi factions calling themselves "Islamic Resistance" have been attacking bases in Iraq and Syria that house American forces, and have announced attacks on Israeli targets, including Eilat on the Red Sea, in support of Gaza.
