Al Jazeera's correspondent reported that an Israeli drone struck the outskirts of the town of Maroun al-Ras in the central sector of South Lebanon this Tuesday morning. The attack follows a series of air raids conducted by Israeli aircraft over Southern Lebanon, concurrent with renewed confrontations at the border between the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Israeli military.
Hezbollah announced the assault on two Israeli military sites along Lebanon’s southern frontier, claiming that its fighters targeted a gathering of occupation troops near the Ya'ar barracks and attacked the Hadab al-Bustan position, confirming direct hits.
Hezbollah has declared that three of its members were killed in South Lebanon, bringing the death toll to 137 since the 8th of October. According to Al Jazeera's correspondent, Israeli occupation aircraft launched a series of raids on several areas in Southern Lebanon, targeting the towns of Kafr Kila and Maroun al-Ras, the Labbouneh area, and the surroundings of Bint Jbeil and Hula. Other areas were also subjected to Israeli artillery fire.
In response, a spokesperson for the Israeli military reported that five soldiers were lightly wounded following multiple rocket launches from Lebanese territory towards the Admit region in Western Galilee. The soldiers were evacuated for medical treatment at a hospital.
The spokesperson added that the air force initiated a series of strikes on various regions in Southern Lebanon, believed to be Hezbollah rocket launch centers headed towards Israeli border towns. It was also stated that military sites and Hezbollah infrastructure were destroyed, and a cell near the village of Hula was targeted.
Danger and Displacement
In related developments, French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu expressed concern that the mission of UNIFIL troops in South Lebanon could become very dangerous. During his inspection of French forces under UNIFIL, Lecornu predicted a road full of uncertainty in the coming weeks and days.
The border regions of South Lebanon have experienced security tensions and exchanges of fire between the Israeli military and elements associated with Hezbollah and Palestinian resistance in Lebanon since the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip on the 8th of October.
A significant number of residents from the border areas in South Lebanon have been displaced to safer locales due to the firefight exchanges between Hezbollah and the Israeli military.
The International Organization for Migration reports that from the 8th of October to the 15th of December, approximately 58,835 individuals, primarily from Southern Lebanon and other areas within the country, were displaced due to the events along the southern border.
