Bayern Leverkusen took a significant step towards claiming their first-ever Bundesliga title with a 3-0 victory over direct rivals Bayern Munich, the reigning champions for the past 11 seasons. The win came on Saturday at “BayArena” during Matchday 21.

Leverkusen (55 points) extended their lead over the Bavarian giants to 5 points at the top of the table. While the championship race is far from over, the clear superiority displayed by Spanish coach Xabi Alonso’s team positions them as strong contenders for the title.

Goals for Leverkusen were scored by Josip Stanisic (18th minute), Spanish player Alejandro Grimaldo (50th minute), and Dutchman Jeremie Frimpong (95th minute).

Stanisic, who is on loan from Bayern Munich to Leverkusen since last summer, had progressed through Bayern’s ranks from the youth team in 2017 to the reserves and then the first team.

Leverkusen maintained an unbeaten record this season across all competitions, with 27 wins and 4 draws in 31 matches. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich suffered their third league defeat, freezing their points at 50 and widening the gap between them and the league leaders.

In other Saturday matches, Union Berlin defeated Wolfsburg 1-0, Heidenheim beat Werder Bremen 2-1, Leipzig drew with Augsburg 2-2, Eintracht Frankfurt tied with Bochum 1-1, and Borussia Monchengladbach played a goalless draw against Darmstadt.
