An Iraqi military source informed Reuters that air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a weaponized drone over the Ain Al-Asad Airbase, which houses American and international forces in Western Iraq, on Monday.
The source added that the attack did not result in any casualties or damage. This incident follows another recent interdiction of a drone above Erbil Airport in Northern Iraq—another location where U.S. and other international forces are stationed.
Ever since the beginning of the Israeli aggression on Gaza on October 7, Ain Al-Asad Airbase has been targeted repeatedly with drones and missiles.
Last week, a military base near Erbil International Airport, within the Iraqi Kurdistan region, was attacked by a drone which caused injuries, disrupted airport operations, and was reported by the Iraqi military.
The United States provides military support and political backing to the Israeli occupation during its ongoing assault on Gaza.
The "Islamic Resistance in Iraq" typically claims responsibility for several attacks targeting the Ain Al-Asad base, as well as sites in northern Syria's Tel Bidder and the Al-Tanf base in the south. The group has previously claimed to have attacked targets in Eilat on the Red Sea and an Israeli gas platform in the Mediterranean Sea.
