Politico, an American news outlet, reports on the "options" being considered by President Joe Biden's administration in response to the Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
The Houthi group previously attacked Israeli vessels in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and commandeered some to Yemeni ports. They also targeted international cargo ships which, according to the group, were bound for Israel.
Later, the group announced a strategy focused on preventing cargo ships from reaching Israel, irrespective of the ship's nationality or managing entity.
Axios, another news site, reported on Friday that according to US officials, the Biden administration has recently sent messages to the Houthis in Yemen through various channels, warning them to stop their assaults on ships in the Red Sea and against Israel.
The officials added that Timothy Lenderking, the US Special Envoy to Yemen, who recently visited the Gulf, asked his counterparts in Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar to convey these warning messages.
Per the American envoy, Washington wishes to form "the broadest possible maritime coalition" to safeguard vessels in the Red Sea and to send a "significant signal" to the Houthis that "further attacks will not be tolerated."
