South Korean Opposition Leader Lee Jae-myung Stabbed in the Neck During Press Interaction
Today, Tuesday, Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the South Korean opposition, sustained a neck wound in a stabbing incident while speaking with journalists in Busan, a southeastern coastal city of the country, as reported by the Yonhap News Agency.
A photograph released by the agency showed the politician lying on the ground with his injury covered by a handkerchief. Lee was conscious when he was transported to a hospital. The attacker was apprehended at the scene.
Lee, the leader of the Democratic Party, lost to conservative Yoon Suk-yeol during the country's presidential election in 2022.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol expressed his "deep concern" following the attack on the opposition leader, stated his spokeswoman, Kim So-kyoung.
Yoon stressed that "our society must never tolerate this kind of violence under any circumstances."
Lee, a former factory worker, suffered an industrial accident as a teenager.
However, his presidential campaign was overshadowed by a series of scandals. He is currently facing trial on bribery charges related to a company suspected of illegally channeling 8 million dollars to North Korea, according to the French Press Agency.
