A recent survey conducted by Israel’s Channel 12 revealed that 51% of Israelis support the call for early elections in Israel.
Additionally, the survey found that 31% of Israelis believe that Benny Gantz, the leader of the Blue and White party and the Minister of War, should end the partnership with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu within the framework of the emergency government and withdraw from it.
The survey also indicated that 43% view Gantz as the most suitable candidate for the premiership, while 27% believe Netanyahu is more suitable.
Furthermore, the survey highlighted that the ruling Likud party, led by Netanyahu, is losing half of its electoral strength, while Gantz’s party, the “State Camp,” has tripled its power.
Calls for early elections in Israel have intensified in recent weeks, although Netanyahu has rejected the idea of holding elections during wartime.
Last Monday, Israeli Army Radio reported that Gantz attempted to overthrow Netanyahu with the help of members of the Likud party led by the latter.
According to the radio, representatives on behalf of Minister Gantz recently contacted ministers and Knesset members from Likud in an attempt to promote replacing Netanyahu in the Knesset.
It was mentioned to Likud members that if they manage to withdraw their confidence in Netanyahu without toppling the government, they will focus on their political future in the unity party.
The idea involves removing Netanyahu and replacing him with another candidate from the Likud party.
The radio stated that Gantz’s close associates suggested different candidates for the Prime Minister’s position without specifically demanding Gantz’s appointment, without mentioning the names.
Netanyahu has faced repeated criticism from the Israeli public and several politicians, including members of the Security Cabinet, due to the crisis of Israeli prisoners held in Gaza and the failure of his government to uncover and deal with the October 7, 2023 attack.
