Former U.S. President Donald Trump has welcomed the U.S. Congress’s rejection of a proposed law aimed at reforming the immigration system, pledging massive deportations of immigrants if re-elected as President of the United States.
Trump’s welcome comes after the U.S. Senate rejected the immigration system reform bill on Saturday, despite months of intense negotiations towards its approval.
Reports indicate that Trump used his influence among Republican members of Congress to obstruct the resolution, denying U.S. President Joe Biden the opportunity to achieve a victory in the immigration issue, as he is likely to face Biden in the upcoming presidential elections in November.
During a campaign rally in South Carolina on Saturday, Trump said, “Let us not forget that this week, we also achieved a great victory that all conservatives should celebrate. We crushed Joe Biden’s disastrous bill.”
Trump praised the Republican members of Congress and their role in hindering the legislation’s enactment, stating that “the whole group did a fantastic job in Congress. We crushed it.”
Trump stressed that deporting immigrants would be a top priority if elected President of the United States, adding, “From day one, I will end all of Biden’s open border policies, and we will launch the largest nationwide deportation operation in U.S. history. We have no other choice.”
The former president built his popularity in his first presidential campaign in 2016, which led him to the White House, by promising to combat immigration and build a wall between the United States and Mexico to reduce the influx of immigrants into America.
The former president is currently engaging in an election battle to secure the Republican Party’s nomination for the presidential elections, with predictions favoring him as the most likely candidate to win the party’s nomination, despite facing trials in four criminal cases ranging from obtaining highly confidential documents to attempting to overturn the results of the previous elections, where he lost to the Democrat Joe Biden.
