Former US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he wants an immediate debate with the current President Joe Biden, despite refusing to debate any of his Republican nomination competitors for the upcoming presidential elections. He expressed this during a radio program, emphasizing the need for a debate for the country’s sake.
In response, Biden, a member of the Democratic Party, commented when asked by journalists about Trump’s invitation to debate, “If I were him, I would want to debate me too. He has nothing else to do.” Trump is the frontrunner in the Republican race to challenge Biden in the November 5th elections but has yet to secure the nomination and declined the request for a debate from his Republican rival, Nikki Haley.
Haley’s campaign responded to Trump’s comments, stating in a press release, “He is extremely cowardly to the extent that he cannot debate with her.”
Trump’s remarks reflect a focus on the potential electoral competition with Biden, who won the Democratic primary elections in South Carolina last Saturday and is expected to secure his party’s nomination. Haley, the former governor of South Carolina and the UN ambassador during Trump’s tenure, is in second place with a significant difference from Trump in opinion polls but has vowed to continue her challenge to secure the Republican nomination.
Trump and Biden held two debates during the 2020 election race, and a third debate was canceled after Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis, and he refused to participate in a virtual debate. Typically, US presidential elections witness three debates each time.
The former US President is facing legal challenges, as he is being tried in four criminal cases ranging from obtaining highly classified documents to attempting to overturn the results of the previous elections, where he lost to the Democrat Joe Biden.
