Samer Abu Daqqa was martyred on Friday while covering the Israeli shelling of Farhana school in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip. After being wounded by shrapnel from a missile fired by an Israeli drone, he lay bleeding on the ground for approximately six hours, trapped in the vicinity of Farhana school. Ambulances were unable to reach him due to the severity of his injuries.

During the same attack, Wael Dahdouh, another colleague covering the bombardment on the school, sustained injuries amid calls to evacuate the trapped casualties there. Abu Daqqa, born in 1978, was a father of three sons and a daughter and resided in the town of Abasan al-Kabira near Khan Younis. He joined Al Jazeera in June 2004, working as a cameraman and video editor.

Al Jazeera Media Network strongly condemned the assassination of Abu Daqqa by the Israeli military forces. In a statement, Al Jazeera said that the occupation forces hindered efforts to provide medical assistance to Abu Daqqa, leaving him to bleed for more than five hours after the injury. The network held Israel “fully responsible for this heinous crime” and the systematic targeting of Al Jazeera’s staff and their families. It also extended its “deep condolences and profound sympathy” to Abu Daqqa’s family in Gaza and Belgium, urging the international community, journalist defense organizations, and the International Criminal Court to take action to hold the occupation accountable.

In a previous statement, Al Jazeera called on the international community to pressure Israel to protect civilians, relief workers, doctors, and journalists, demanding accountability for those responsible for these crimes in the Gaza Strip.
