Bahaa Masalmeh had been eagerly planning a surprise for his wife Ahed’s upcoming 21st birthday. Tragically, on January 15, Ahed, a young mother to a six-month-old baby girl, was fatally shot by Israeli forces during a raid into the town of Dura near Hebron in the southern West Bank. She was inside her brother-in-law’s home waiting for her husband’s return.
The couple, married for only 15 months, had created cherished memories, and Ahed had filled Bahaa’s life with joy. Describing her as the love of his life, Bahaa emphasized her positive and infectious spirit. Regrettably, he is now tasked with raising their daughter, Ayloul, alone.
After dropping Ahed off at his brother’s house that morning, Bahaa, returning with food, witnessed the harrowing events that unfolded. Following a commotion in the neighborhood, he found Ahed fatally wounded. Despite efforts to call for an ambulance, Israeli soldiers prevented timely medical assistance, and Ahed passed away.
Tahani Masalmeh, Bahaa’s sister, was present during the tragic incident and vividly recalled Ahed’s unexpected premonition about parting. Similarly, Ahed’s sister, Sumoud, expressed shock at her sister’s untimely death, highlighting the difficulties faced in reaching her funeral due to heightened tensions in the region.
Ahed, with aspirations of pursuing further education and nurturing her small family, was described by her husband as having “big dreams”. Despite the profound loss, Bahaa is determined to realize Ahed’s ambitions through their daughter.
