What Is the Healthy Amount of Salt Intake?

The German Nutrition Society has highlighted the significance of salt for muscle and nerve health, while simultaneously warning that excessive consumption can increase the risk of high blood pressure and subsequent heart and cardiovascular diseases such as strokes and heart attacks.

To benefit from salt while avoiding its risks, the Society recommends not exceeding the recommended daily maximum of 6 grams, equivalent to about one teaspoon.

Reducing salt intake can be achieved by avoiding fast foods and ready-to-eat meals such as sausages, canned soups, frozen pizza, and unhealthy snacks like potato chips and crackers, which contain high levels of salt.

Instead, cooking at home using fresh ingredients allows for control over the amount of salt added to food. It’s also possible to reduce salt and enhance flavor by adding herbs with distinctive tastes.
