Why is Bellingham Fasting from Scoring Lately?

After an exceptional start with Real Madrid this season, English star Jude Bellingham finds himself in a goal-scoring drought in the recent matches he has played for the Merengues.

The attacking midfielder has struggled to find the back of the net regularly as he did earlier in the season, despite breaking several scoring records at the Santiago Bernabéu during the first three months, surpassing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Alfredo Di Stefano, and Zinedine Zidane. However, Bellingham has failed to score from open play for almost two months now.

Since his last open-play goal on December 17th, Bellingham has only scored one penalty goal against Almeria in January. The young talent, recipient of the 2023 Golden Boy award for the best young player, has not found the back of the net from open play in his last 8 matches with the Spanish giants.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti previously mentioned that Bellingham, despite being a midfielder, gets plenty of opportunities in attack. Still, the lack of a fixed position on the field has caused difficulties for opponents, although teams have now found ways to limit his effectiveness, sometimes surrounding him with four defenders.

In an attempt to ease the pressure on Bellingham, Ancelotti recently stated, “He is a great player, and it shouldn’t surprise us when he doesn’t score. Scoring is not his only job as some may think.”

Bellingham has featured in 28 matches for Real Madrid this season across various competitions, scoring 18 goals and providing 8 assists.
